UNDERSTANDING THE STORY
Institution and Department: Two Connected Histories
The story begins with the institution that eventually became Takoradi Technical University. Its technical-education foundations created the wider academic environment in which applied arts, commercial art and graphic design education could develop.
The dedicated Graphic Design Technology Department was established later. The timeline therefore distinguishes clearly between the history of the university and the history of the department.

1954
Institutional Foundations
Takoradi Technical University traces its institutional history to the Government Technical Institute established in April 1954. The institute provided craft and technician-level education in commercial and technical subjects.

1993–1994
A Tertiary Pathway Emerges
Polytechnic reforms brought Takoradi Polytechnic into Ghana’s tertiary education system. Higher National Diploma programmes began during the 1993/1994 academic year, expanding access to applied and professionally oriented study.

2008
A Dedicated Department Is Formed
The Department of Graphic Design Technology was carved out of the former Fine Art Department. This created a dedicated academic home for graphic design education within the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology.

A Technical University Context
Takoradi Polytechnic became Takoradi Technical University, beginning a new institutional chapter centred on technical education, applied research, professional preparation, innovation and industry relevance.
